About Featured Expert: SUPREME Consortium
The SUPREME Consortium is a European Union–backed initiative focused on advancing the industrial production of superconducting quantum chips. Coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the consortium brings together research institutions, industrial partners, and technology organizations across multiple EU member states.
SUPREME’s primary objective is not to introduce a single device breakthrough, but to address the manufacturing challenges that limit the scalability of superconducting quantum technologies. These challenges include fabrication repeatability, process stability, yield improvement, and supply-chain coordination—factors widely recognized as critical barriers to transitioning superconducting qubits from laboratory environments to reproducible industrial production.
The consortium operates within a multi-year framework that emphasizes shared infrastructure, pilot manufacturing processes, and coordinated development of fabrication methodologies. Its progress is expected to be measured through improvements in process consistency and validated manufacturing pathways rather than short-term performance metrics. SUPREME’s role within the European quantum ecosystem is therefore primarily infrastructural, supporting the long-term viability of superconducting quantum technologies.
